I've been both a company actuary and a consulting actuary. I've done both product development and financial reporting. My main focus now is ERM and larger-size project management. With my team we also do economic capital, cost reduction, litigation support and strategy consulting.

More background:

I grew up in Jamaica, studied at University of the West Indies in Jamaica and University of Waterloo in Canada. I loved Waterloo, but my fiancee was in Jamaica so I went back there.  I started my working career as a computer programmer. We got married in Jamaica. We lived in the Bahamas for 3 years, moved to Dallas, Texas (1978), then to Chicago, IL (1987). Now I live in the Chicago area with my wife of 35+ years, Mary. Our 2 daughters are young adults, one has just finished law school and the other works in pharmaceutical advertising.

I heard about the profession from British actuaries while working as a computer programmer in Jamaica. Students there at the time all did Institute exams, and so did I. Passing my final exam and gaining the FIA in 1977 was a very proud moment. I have always been proud of our profession.

I gained my FSA through mutual recognition in 2001. The Society of Actuaries in 2000 signed treaties with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, granting mutual recognition of each other's Fellowship status, subject to residence and experience requirements. At the time I had nearly 30 years of actuarial experience, including over 20 years in the US. I also had substantial volunteer experience, including Chair of the Financial Reporting Section, so I immediately became eligible to run for a position on the Board. I was elected to the Board of Governors (now Board of Directors) in October 2002.  My term ended in 2005. I was off the board for a year. Then I ran again and was elected VP in October 2006. My term as VP will end in October 2008.

I've worked in companies in junior and senior positions. I've been a consultant working on both technical projects and larger scale deals. Experience in each area is different and complementary. My company experience makes me a better consultant, for example, because of understanding the practical realities around implementing new ideas. My consulting experience helped me in a company job,  for example being able to identify goals and find different approaches to getting the job done.
