Here's a family photo, myself, my wife Mary, my daughters Marian and Rachel. And dog Zena.

When I'm not an actuary, I'm an amateur astronomer. I built a 6" telescope when I was in high school. I don't have as much time for hobbies now as I did then! But I have found time to chase eclipses in Hawaii, Aruba, Indiana, the Pacific Ocean and the Sahara Desert.  A total solar eclipse is an amazing, life changing experience for most people. It's much more exciting than a lunar eclipse (although those are very interesting too!). The moon occasionally moves in front of the sun if the orbits line up just right. Technically this is an occultation (blocking of the view) of the sun. An eclipse is actually the term for a falling shadow. Anyway, below is a photo taken through my Questar telescope, Canon A-1 35 mm camera on Kodak film. The photo was taken March 29, 2006. This shows the extensive corona, complete with magnetic lines of flux (north pole to the top), and bright red spots of chromosphere showing through crater valleys on the moon's limb.

Another highlight--travel to the Galapagos Islands. The archipelago is politically part of Ecuador. In April 2005 our group toured the islands, criss-crossing the equator, wading onto the islands and taking hundreds of photos. The finches, boobies, iguanas, fur sea lions, tortoises and penguins are fascinating.  Below is the magnificent frigate bird on his nest.

My favorite music includes Gilbert & Sullivan, Jamaican reggae, oldies from the 1950's and 1960's (as collected on 45 rpm vinyl records!) and Country & Western. Also Beethoven. My ambition is, one day, to get good at a musical instrument. Piano, probably.

Favorite outdoor activity is going to the beach. Golf and tennis are the best sports that I'm average at. Also do some running and light weightlifting. Did lots of boating and scuba in the past.

Most recent event--proud dad with University of Chicago Law School graduate daughter... June 2008.
